The E3 conference is currently taking place and it has become very clear that the Playstation 4 will not be released, possibly not for several years... Simply put the Playstation 3 console just has a lot more life left in it.

Playstation Move

Playstation Move

Earlier this week there was a release of a couple of videos that posed to be for the Playstation 4 (PS4 viral videos). These videos of course sent ripples through the gaming community and left everyone completely confused and at a loss... why would Playstation bring out the PS4 when they had just announced the Playstation Move. Everyone had assumed the introduction of 3d games and motion gaming capabilities was more than enough... but the videos were leaked and raised a lot of questions.

As it turns our the videos were created by a college student working on a degree in advertising... The student in hopes of generating a little bit of buzz, and possibly jump start his career released the videos, and sent shock waves through the gaming world.

The big news this year is not the Playstation 4, we likely have several years before a new Playstation console is introduced, but the Playstation Move, and the upcoming pre buy opportunities.

There is a lot coming from Playstation this winter season, 3d games are likely to be a big hit as well as thee introduction of motion gaming with the Playstation Move... Its going to be a great year for Playstation fans!

Sony Playstation 4 Console Name

May 14, 2010 by Sony PS4
Filed under PS4 Featured Articles, SonyPS4.com News

Several people have been asking if it is certain that the next generation of Playstation consoles will be called the Playstation 4.

We at SonyPS4.com have come across so much information over the course of the last year that points to this it is a certainty... The next Playstation console will indeed be the Sony Playstation 4, and we will go through a list of quotes and references that we hope will shine some light on the subject. There is little information available on the Playstation's next gaming console , and that is to be expected at this point in development, but as you will see many of the most prominent names and employees of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. have referred to the next Playstation gaming console as the Playstation 4.

  • Playstation inventor Ken Kutaragi, as chairman and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.  is already thinking ahead to Playstation 4 and beyond. In an exclusive interview with EE Times, Kutaragi said: "As a matter of course, I have the vision of Playstation 4, 5 and 6, which will merge into the network." Read More.
  • PS3.IGN.com talks about the possibility of the Playstation 4 being released at a 3d gaming consolee, possibly the first of it's kind. While it is a grey area in terms of what the Playstation 4 will be capable of, the console is again referred to by a leading game resource as the Playstation 4... Really IGN speaks of the Playstation 4 frequently, read more about the PS4 possibly being a 3d gaming console here.
  • In an interview with Jack Tretton, the CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, again the next Playstation console is mentioned by name, as the Playstation 4. "A question I often get is when we are going to see Playstation 4. When somebody can craft the technology that exceeds what we're able to do on the PS3, but we are still just starting to harness it." While not ready to put a date on it, it would seem Jack Tretton is certain of the next Playstation consoles name. Read more from the FastCompany interview.
  • Geek.com also mentions the Playstation 4 by name in referring to Cell alternatives to the Playstation 4 gaming console. While again its mostly rumors and speculation on what the Playstation 4 gaming console will offer, its again another authority in the gaming and tech industry referring to the next Playstation gaming console as the Playstation 4. Check it out.
  • Mr. Yoshida in an interview with VideogamesZone.de, translated by Xbitlabs.com here. From the Xbitlabs.com article "Even though Mr. Yoshida did not confirm that PlayStation 4 will use Blu-ray disc or a next-generation optical format, it is highly-possible that the console due in several years will use optical discs to store huge next-generation video games." Many times during the interview Shuhei Yoshida, senior vice president of product development at Sony Computer Entertainment America, mentions the next Playstation gaming console as the Playstation 4.

There are literally thousands of references of the next Playstation console being referred to as the Playstation 4, I have tried to include only those that are the most credible, and those that can be easily referenced yourself if you choose to do so... A real big part of Sony keeping with the Playstation numbered series has to do with them maintaining the brand that they have built up since the launch of the first Playstation on December 3, 1994.

In reality we find it unlikely that Sony will ever choose to go away from the numerical naming system for the Playstation console generations. These names are just far too recognizable, and instantly associated with the gaming consoles that you are familiar with. Sony Playstation has even hinted at this with a commercial that was aired during the launch of the Playstation 2 that featured the Playstation 9.

This commercial, while possibly some what satire, really is further proof that Sony intends to stay with the Playstation numerical branding for as long as they are producing gaming systems. Dated 2078 and offering some of the most wild and futuristic technology imaginable, this advertisement goes to the merit and power of the current Playstation branding tactics.

All of this, and thousands more references throughout the internet, point to the next Playstation gaming console as being named the Playstation 4. With Sony unlikely to announce any official information regarding the Playstation 4, until just before launch, the mentioning of the console by name from Sony executives is the biggest indication so far.

The release of the Move could bring the release of the PS4 closer

March 15, 2010 by Sony PS4

Sony unveiled its Move system Wednesday March 10, 2010 at the Game Developers conference.  The system will be available as a kit that includes the Move controller, a PlayStation Eye camera, and a Move game for the PlayStation 3.

The Move will allow gamers to play the new games as if they were part of the action. It will be similar to the Wii but more advanced. The Eye camera detects the exact location and movements of the controllers. The Eye also has voice and image recognition which will allow for alternate reality games.

The Move made make it a good idea of Sony to release the PlayStation 4 sooner. The PS3 won’t allow four player to use the Move remote and subcontroller which is required for some games. The PS4 might have more Bluetooth ports which will allow for more players using the Move remotes and subcontroller.

Playstation 4 Release Almost Common Knowledge

December 15, 2009 by Sony PS4

A lot of people are beginning to talk about the Playstation 4 release, while it is expected to be on shelves winter 2012, it is a hot topic right now. Playstation 3 consoles are now nearly profitable for the Playstation brand, this is purely console cost. iSupply has reported the estimated cost to develop a Playstation 3 at only 38 dollars above the cost of a Playstaion 3 to a consumer. This means that very soon Sony will actually be making a profit on the Playstation 3 console, this is huge for Sony as a great amount of the gaming revenue comes from the games, distribution and licensing that is involved.

This paves the way for the development of the Playstation 4. There is a lot of spectulation if the PS4 will consist some of the 3d capabilities that have been recently displayed for the (possible) next generation of televisions.

This being released by Sony does send some mixed signals, but to be honest there were a lot of great exhibits this past year at the various game shows. The 3d television could bring a whole new generation of gaming, but there was another that also caught our eye, that made us think.... maybe the next generation of gaming will just be incredibly modular, something that there will be several additions for (with the success of all of the various little Wii toys, this is likely to be the way that all console brands go). One exhibit that we thought would make a great addition to the Playstation console was the projector, check out the video below to fully understand.

It is always great to see such unique designs and ideas for the gaming world, and this is going to be addition that I expect you to see on many consoles... although dont expect it to be called the J-dome, those guys will surely be bought out... and the product marketed by each consoles brand, but this is going to be a big hit in the gaming world when the big wigs catch up...

With all of the buzz about the Playstation 4, Google News has a story on the subject nealry every day (click here to check for your self) it is anyone guess what the PS4 will offer in terms of development capabilities, gaming abilities, or even type of processor (although there are lots of rumors... One thing is for certain, the popular expected release date is 2012... Playstation 4 is already a hot topic on Google in the search engine as well (click here to check for your self) it is amazing how much information if out there, it is just trying to determine what is legitimate and what is just more from the rumor mill. We at SonyPS4.com know that there is almost no certainity yet in the Playstation 4, but can say that we do indeed believe it is now more that ever somethat that will certainly be released by Son

3D Playstation Gaming Sooner Than Expected

September 3, 2009 by Sony PS4

3D Playstation gaming can be coming much faster than anyone had ever expected... With only about 40% of the current Playstation users utilizing the HD technology currently at their finger tips, no one was really expecting for Playstation to be pushing for the next generation display technology. But Sony is.

The Sony 3D Bravia is a 3D TV, yeah we said 3D... We have a video below from CES 2009 that talks about some of the progress that had been completed on the 3D TV, but word is Sony has come miles since this video was created.

This is far more than a rumor, or even spectulation... This is going to be in the next generation of console from Sony.

The Financial Times has a great report outlining some very key points about the future of Sony, and the 3D technology, but the most important quote for gamers is...

Due to speak today at the IFA technology trade show in Berlin, Sir Howard Stringer, Sony chief executive, will announce plans not only to sell 3D Bravia television sets, but to make Sony's Vaio laptop computers, PlayStation 3 games consoles and Blu-ray disc players compatible with the technology.

Now read that carefully, they are referring to the Playstation 3 being a 3D console in the not too distant future... Is it a typo, speculation, were they referring to the Playstation 4, or are we really going to see changes of that magnitude to the Playstation 3? Many speculate that the Playstation 3 console will experience massive changes before the console is fazed out for the next generation.

Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer has been recorded stating the "3D train is on the track--and we're the ones to drive it home." This is just one more display of Sony wanting to push above and beyond the compitention and offer the best available gaming experience. Bringing the 3D technology to the Playstation 3 will bring in such a greater value on, what is already the best buy for your dollar, the third generation Playstation console.

With the IFA trade show just around the corner, we are likely to hear more very soon!

Playstation 4 will be the first next generation console

August 14, 2009 by Sony PS4

The Playstation 4 is rumored by many to be the first next generation console to be released.

John Carmack American game programer and co-founder of id Software states:

The whole jockeying for who's gonna release next gen console first is very interesting and really divorced from the technical side of things. Whether Sony wants to try and jump the gun to, you know, to prevent the same kind of 360 lag from happening to them again seems likely. As developers, we would really like to see this generation stretch as long as possible, you know, we'd like to see it be quite a few more years before a next-gen console comes out, but I suspect someone will wind up shipping something earlier rather than later.

John Carmack is speaking in reference to what the race to put out the next console, primarily between Microsoft and Sony. Sony had suffered greatly during the previous launch, the launch of the Playstation 3, due to the Xbox 360 having launched just before.

The best thing for the game creators would be to remain on a single console for as long as possible, giving them a better chance to further their experience and ability in developing better games. More time on the Playstation 3 means the developers will have more time to launch games for it, and more time for the console to gain market share. But Sony can not afford to launch after Xbox, and Xbox knows they need the early launch to stand out... so someone is likely to jump the gun.

One benefit of the Playstation 4 launching early is that it could easily launch with and without the Blu-Ray, giving consumers the chance to purchase the new console for much less, and give the developers the ability to develope on a much less expensive platform. At this point it is unknown what console will be the next to launch, and the first of the next generation consoles, everything is a rumor or spectulation... But it is belived by many that Playstation 4 will lead the way.

Playstation 4 (PS4) vs. Xbox 720

August 8, 2009 by Sony PS4

The Playstation and Xbox have been going at it since Microsoft has gotten into the console business, and the next generation of consoles will be no different. The current consumer is not yet ready for the next generation of consoles, but its not too early to start looking at what may be coming, and what should be coming. A lot of crazy rumors have gone around regarding the Playstation 4, we have even help spread many of them (always in the Playstation 4 rumor section), but in reality it is not necessary for Playstation to launch first, and will likely not even be announced until a year after the Xbox 720.

Playstation Logo

Playstation Logo

Microsoft was only able to wait four years after the launch of the Xbox before they announced the Xbox 360, while the Playstation 3 was launched 6 years after the Playstation 2. Longer console life means more profitability for the company, and usually better services and products because of it! And the 2 year stretch has nothing on what Sony could get away with now...

The Xbox 720 will likely be necessary within a year or so for Microsoft to continue to keep pace with the Playstation 3 game capabilities, thats just to keep up. Few of the existing Playstation 3 games use all of the possible disk space that the Blu-Ray technology allows, meaning there is a lot of growth available still for the Playstation 3 market... And the longer the Playstation 3 can stay around, the less it will cost developers to utelize and thus more/better games.

With the Xbox 360 sales begining to drop, and current hardware limitations, it is likely that Microsoft will be the next to launch a new console... for now referred to as the Xbox 720. Current assumed plans for the Xbox 360 include price cuts for the coming Christmas sales rush, and possibly again late in the spring.

Xbox Logo

Xbox Logo

Xbox launching their next generation console likely 2 or 3 years before Sony even announces the next generation of Playstation, will give Sony the opportunity to live up to the 10 year console lifespan commited to earlier. This type of spread will also give Playstation amazing market share, and more than enough time to make up for all of the money invested into the Playstation 3, which lets admit, the Playstation 3 over delivers in every way the hardware can.

The number of upgrades that can still be added to the Playstation 3, make it unlikely to see a Playstation 4 in the next couple of years, and the only NECESSARY hardware upgrade is something to compete with the Wii motion sensing capabilities... wonder if it will be an upgrade or introduced on the Playstation 4?

In our opinion Playstation 4 will stand head and shoulders above the Xbox 720, and likely have foes we have not even known yet... could Apple be brewing up a system? Xbox or Playstation 4, who do you think will launch first?

Are consumers ready for the PS4?

August 8, 2009 by Sony PS4

Consumers are not ready for the Playstation 4, it is just still to early. While the technology is available to Sony to come up with a more powerful gaming system, less than 1/2 of the users of the Playstation 3 are capable of taking advantage of the HD capabilities... And almost none of the Playstation 3 games take full advantage of the Blu-Ray technology available.

Sony Playstation 4 Concept Design

Sony Playstation 4 Concept Design

With the majority of the Playstation 3 consoles not currently hooked up to an HDTV, what gain would there be for the average consumer in a console so far beyond their home theater equipment capabilities.

The Playstation 3 is already network ready, High Definition capable, a Blue-Ray player, and the most capable gaming console available to the public... Thanks to the firmware upgrades and online capabilities of the Playstation 3, Sony and other hardware companies can continue to release console improvements, while keeping to the same console.

The future of gaming is online, there is no question about it... The Playstation 3 is online, and more than capable to hold its own... For these reasons, it will be at least a couple of years before the Playstation 4 is even seriouly considered by Sony as something the consumers may be prepared for...
