Sony Tablets
It’s the dawn of a new age, and Sony knows how to keep up with the trends – while making them better. The hottest items on the market are
tablets: handheld, touchscreen devices that serve as a laptop with a better UI for portability.
Sony is known for high-quality devices, like their TVs, PS3, laptops, and more. Now that they have dabbled in all handheld platforms, such as the PSP and Xperia Play, they are moving on and doing Sony Tablets: dubbed S and P.
Sony hosted a press event in Tokyo in April 2011 to announce the tablets, and so far we expect to see them for the first time during E3 2011. They were designed by VAIO but will most likely not carry the VAIO brand new upon release.
The way the tablets are crafted will rival iPad’s, especially with the addition of PlayStation branding. The tablets will be able to play PlayStation One games upon launch, and most likely will be able to support newer games as time goes on. Videos abound on YouTube about the specifications, and here’s the breakdown on the tablets we know of.
S: The S features Honeycomb, the newest version of Android software, and may possibly upgrade to Android Ice Cream Sandwich later. It is a 9.4 inch media tablet with front and rear facing cameras, flat and touch screen with a wrap around design to resemble a folded magazine.
It has a Tegra 2 SoC and a customized UI that hasn’t been seen before.
An additional bonus? It can also work as a remote control for all Sony gear.
P: The P tablet is completely differently physically. It is a dual-screen clam-shell design, making it easier to
carry around (one video even has a guy carrying it inside his jacket, it is so small).
The screens are both 5.5 inches with 1024×480 pixels. It also sports Tegra 2 SoC like the S, and has a camera. The hinged tablet allows for the screen to either be a 45 degree angle or lay flat.
Because of the two screens, the P allows even better UI layout, perfect for e-readers, keyboards, message displays, split display, and game controllers for PS One gaming.
The S and P are both certified by PlayStation, have WiFi and 3G/4G compatibility, and support DLNA.
The Sony S Tablet releases September 16, 2011. The release date for the P tablet is not yet known.
